Something that’s always bothered me about Green Day fans is how they treat the new music. Now, I’m not saying every fan is like this, but I’ve seen complaints about their new material online and in person a lot. They’ll say things like “I miss old Green Day” and “old Green Day used to be so unique” and “the new stuff sucks so much!” I mean, if you feel that way, that’s cool. I just always found it interesting how the fans act about the new stuff. And I find it disheartening how uncool it is to like the newer music in this fanbase.
One of the things I always hear is that Green Day has “changed so much” or “sold out” or “just became boring and serious.” I think that whoever says this is all wrong and it aggravates me whenever fans say things like this.
1. Of course they’ve changed! They’re not 22 year-old kids anymore, but grown men (almost 40 years-old) who have gone through divorces and marriage trouble, have their own kids and family to worry about, and, on top of all that, toured the world a few times over. So, yeah, they’re not going to be writing about masturbation and falling in love with girls anymore. If they still did, then I’d be kind of scared. Also, I love the fact that they’re a constantly changing band. Every album of theirs is unique and different in its own way, but running through it is still obviously Green Day. Their new stuff isn’t random, either. You can see the slow progression if you listen through all their albums in order. Change is good. Do you really want Green Day to just become another Nickelback, churning out the same albums over and over again? Luckily, this is totally hypothetical and would never happen, but still, you know what I mean.
2. The “sold out” argument always makes me laugh. If you think they sold out with American Idiot and 21st Century Breakdown, then you would probably think they sold out with Dookie or Nimrod. Something I noticed with a lot of fans is that their older albums never get any of these criticisms. It’s just their newer stuff. Green Day was just doing what they wanted, something that they’ve always done for the past 20-ish years. I don’t think they really care anymore if you think one of their albums has “sold out” and they aren’t who they used to be anymore. No, I don’t think they sold out with American Idiot and 21st Century Breakdown. I think that they were just trying new things and finding new things to do musically. And I don’t think that that’s bad at all.
3. The last point I’ll make is that I hear a lot of fans say that now “they’ve become boring and serious.” They’ve become a little more serious. I’ll give you that. But boring? Never. If you’ve been to any of their recent concerts, then you know that they still care about rocking out and having a good time. They still party, curse, drink and pretty much bring down the house at every concert. And who can forget Foxboro Hot Tubs? Just a side project done for fun with no real serious intention behind it. I think their music has gone a little more serious, but they’ve never lost sight of the fun that they’ve always had as a band.
When I first got into Green Day, the first album I listened to in full was American Idiot. Kerplunk! was the second album I listened to by them. I would often just switch between the two albums and take turns listening to both of them. Yes, I could tell that the sound was different between both albums, but it was still undeniably Green Day. Because of this introduction to them, there is no such thing as Old and New Green Day for me. To me, it’s all just Green Day.
Okay. Rant over.
(Agree? Disagree? Just message me if you have a different opinion. But be nice! I’m cool with hearing other people’s opinions, but I don’t want to be called stupid or an idiot because of my own. Everyone’s different. It’s cool.)
Agree. completely.
